YLI History
The Young Leaders for Indonesia (YLI) is an intensive leadership development program initiated by McKinsey & Company Indonesia in 2008, now run independently by the Young Leaders for Indonesia Foundation, established in 2012. The program was created in response to the challenges in sourcing local high quality talents in Indonesia. As Indonesia undergoes a generational transition, there is an urgent need for locomotives for the next generation to lead and drive the nation forward.
To address this, the YLI Foundation aims to shape young Indonesian leaders especially at the critical transition period from the final year of university to the first entry-level job. The Foundation is fully committed to developing world-class leaders with strong leadership skills, a global mindset, and a deep understanding of local culture and traditions, essential for unleashing Indonesia’s potential.
Now entering our 16th year, the YLI Program has developed 1,228 talented young leaders who now contribute to various sectors across the country. The early generations of the program have become leading experts and industry leaders in their respective fields. In recent years, we have increased the number of participants per wave to accommodate hidden talents from more diverse backgrounds.
Our aim is to select high-performing and well-rounded students who aspire to be leaders, demonstrated through active involvement in student activities such as heading student organizations, achieving outstanding accomplishments like winning national or international competitions, or founding and leading startups. To broaden the impact and reach of the program, the YLI Foundation remains committed to its mission of developing the next generation of Indonesian leaders.
